 · Local Area Network (LAN) – networking devices such as switches, computers, and the centers are interconnected and access that same network address range. By default, all information, also known as packets, which is generated by a particular network device, transmitting all other network devices within the LAN

 · Router – a device for data transfer, also known as packets between networks local area.

 · virtual local area network (VLAN) – Computer groups of networks of different physical LAN segments to communicate about with others as if they represented single LAN.

Disadvantages LAN standard

A LAN standard configuration has some drawbacks important. First, a local network can not exchange information over a wide area network (WAN). Then, the physical nature of a LAN requires changes in network devices and cabling whenever there are changes in the physical location of network equipment. A LAN also shares the full bandwidth available equitably among all network devices and computers as well. Finally, from a local network that broadcasts all the packets for each device on the LAN, it is possible for a device to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information. A traditional LAN configuration is appropriate for small office with only a few network devices, but for large networks or for networks that require a local network to break down into smaller segments, a VLAN will be necessary.

Advantages of the LAN VLAN

Applying a VLAN overcomes the disadvantages of a standard LAN configuration in several ways. These are: functional groups, the separation of bandwidth, reduce the cost of reduced network maintenance, and ultimately, improving safety.

First, VLAN allows an administrator to group devices and equipment with similar functions in a single working group. This prevents sensitive information from leaving the working group and be accessible by other network devices. For example, in a traditional LAN environment, to maintain the functions of human resource services and has a separate department of production, each department would have its physical network and both networks are connected by a router. Using a VLAN two segments that would eliminate the need for the router and departments could relying on a single network cabling system. This as a department, such as human resources, to have multiple sites connected by a LAN, New York and Los Angeles, for example.

Secondly, VLAN control the flow of data between VLAN segments. This means that VLANs can share the band bandwidth to different segments, in effect, increase the bandwidth available to any particular device. Segmentation also reduces overall broadcast traffic, reducing the use of bandwidth. Suppose the example above is running on a network of 100 Mbps in a typical LAN 100Mbps network must be shared between all devices, both human resources and production. By separating the two, each department has available 100 Mbps, doubling bandwidth and reducing the broadcast traffic.

Third, the maintenance of the network can be reduced. Being able to make changes within a VLAN segment avoids the need for the administrator to make physical changes in devices when they are displaced. You can also remove the need for additional cabling to connect a device to the appropriate network segment.

Fourthly, the reduced network maintenance may result in cost reduction. In addition to improving performance, because better bandwidth and reduce the spread, resulting in increased productivity and hence reduce costs.

Fifth, a VLAN provides an important piece of the overall design of security network. The ability of a VLAN segmentation guarantees that packets of information are available for machines and devices that are intended. This prevents unauthorized devices, and therefore authorized personnel to access potentially sensitive information, such as human resources information.

Although there is still a place for the use of a traditional LAN, when the network becomes larger and that the situations listed above become more critical, a VLAN becomes a viable option to improve overall network performance and security.

VLANs are only part of an overall network design. Cisco Systems, manufacturer leading networking equipment, provides certification that identifies, if any, of VLANs on a network. CCNA training is an excellent way to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for this certification.

Question: Your network has 100 nodes in your area, including 2 remotes. To isolate resources Traffic Human whole network traffic that you could:

a. Install a router on the main line

b. Establish a VLAN with two segments

c. Establish separate LANs in different remote locations

d. All of the above

Answer: B. Implementing a VLAN with two segments to allow isolation of human resources data from the rest of the network and allow the segments that extended over the WAN.

CBT Planet is a computer training company that offers companies, as well as individuals, various types of training programs. Some options include certification boot camps such as the CCNA boot camp, computer based self-study, online training and onsite training programs.
